Research Functions
The National Centre for Epilepsy (NCE) will provide facilities for research into epilepsy and related conditions. Currentlythe National Epilepsy Programme based at Beaumont Hospital which includes a certain amount of research however research is also based in other centres throughout the country. The NCE will replace these facilities and provide a central location for epilepsy research in Ireland. Currently funding for projects is provided on an individual basis by the Health Research Board, the HSE and others. The NCE will provide a central facility with which all research funding can be associated. Where relevant this will enable the relationships between projects to be easily defined and will also offer an opportunity for participation in projects with research facilities abroad. This will enable research funding from abroad as well as nationally. These would include Harvard University Medical School, Liverpool University Medical School, Pittsburg University and others. Currently the Irish National Foundation for Epilepsy Research (INFER) provides a central body for research projects and funding. The foundation will become an integral part of the NCE and will co-ordinate the management of the research facility. Current projects which would be carried out at the NCE include:
1. In-vivo Magnetic Resonance Based Brain Morphometry
This includes:
2. Telemedicine.
This programme involves research and development of a national (and ultimately international) communication structure for ongoing patient care and research through the implementation of Telemedicine. A teleneurophysiology project is currently funded by the HSE. A video conferencing network which aims to support the integration of epilepsy services in Cork, Galway and Dublin is funded by the Health Research Board.
3. Electronic Patient Record.
This project involves the design and implementation of an Electronic Patient Record (EPR). This EPR will support epilepsy clinical care and research activities. Ultimately the EPR will be accessible to authorised and authenticated healthcare proffesionals and patients at any location. This will help advance the continuity of care across all levels of the health service. This project is funded by the Health Research Board.
4. Epilepsy and Pregnancy Register.
A register to access the health of patients druging pregnancy and the potential effect of anticonvulsation drugs on the health of their children.
5. Pharmacogenetics and Epilepsy.
Funded by the Health Education Authority (HEA), this project aims to understand the genetic basis for drug response so that eventually anti-epileptic medication will be more individually prescribed.
6. Speciality Nursing based Research.
The provision of post graduate nursing facilities for research into Epilepsy and associated disorders.
7. Anti-epileptic Drugs (AEDs) and Bone Density.
This is a study to determine the prevalence in Ireland of bone disorders associated with AEDs among Epilepsy suffers.
